MABC's Mammography Program

"A lack of health insurance is associated with lower survival among breast cancer patients."

Eley, JW, Hill HA, Chen VW, Austin DF, Wesley MN, et. al. Racial Differences In Survival From Breast Cancer. Results of The National Cancer Institute Black/White Cancer Survival Study. JAMA 1994; 272: 947-954

"Also, breast cancer patients with low incomes have lower five year relative survival rates than high income patients, and low-income African-American women are three times more likely to be diagnosed with advanced disease than higher-income African-American women."

National Cancer Institute, Breast Cancer Research and Programs: an Overview. National Cancer Institute. Bethesda, MD. 1995.

A screening mammography is a critical tool in detecting early stage breast cancer. The goal of Men Against Breast Cancer's Mammography Program is to increase breast cancer survival rates through early detection and treatment. This program is specifically targeted to low-income, underinsured and underserved women. Women diagnosed as part of this program will have access to care and treatment necessary in their battle against breast cancer. The MABC National Mammography Program will provide screening through physician or clinic referral.

The objectives of this program include the following:

  • Educate women and their male partners to the three steps of early detection of breast cancer: 1) monthly breast self-examination, 2) annual clinical examination, and 3) annual screening mammography
  • Provide mammograms to low-income, uninsured, and underserved women who have a written referral from a physician or clinic
  • Provide women with care and follow-up treatment deemed necessary from the initial screening mammogram
  • Provide social service consultations and referrals to other local support providers
  • Develop outreach programs designed to educate and increase awareness of other existing programs and services available to low-income, uninsured, and underserved women.
